You've Entered My Heart

You are the silence
of crickets and stars.
You are the essence
which fills my thoughts.

I’m wide awake
beneath a California moon,
a conversation with my heart
telling me what it wants.

Many trails through redwood trees,
Douglas fir, tan oak, and ferns;
a mountain stream at my feet:
Somehow I knew this was about you.

You, like my first encounter
of the lighthouse and sea.
You, the highest epiphany
which grips me today.

I nod my head to the sky
as if a god is watching,
sit and stare and breathe
until the moment fills my heart.

Now I wait for the day I’ll see you:
Standing on yellow birch leaves in the sun.
Your hand extended, my eyes anxious;
our path chosen and waiting.
